The popularity of Tango dance is alive and well. Places like Scandinavia and Japan are expressing their passion through the language of Tango. This form of dancing first came into existence near the end of the 1800’s and it was a favorite among the poor or Portenos of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

At first, it was not embraced by the upper class but eventually the irresistible charm of Tango found a place in their hearts and by the early 1920’s even Europe had become bitten by the bug.

These days the popularity of Tango is seen all over the world and there are many Tango clubs to support its spirit. What makes Tango dancing so special is the synchronicity between two people that can express many emotions spoken through its steps.

Since it’s a personal experience between two people, the mood can be created to express anger, pain, joy, romance and love. It is very beautiful to see two people so engaged in the moment using Tango as a vehicle to deliver them to a mutually agreed upon destination.

With its Tango singers verbally conveying the vivid messages contained in every step, the popularity of Tango will continue to inspire many.

The Milonga derived from the music and dance of the people living in the country-side.

Band leaders could not reproduce the guitar rhythms necessary for the Tango Flamenco with orchestra instruments, and as such, the Tango Flamenco was fused with the rhythms of the Habanera. The Tango Habanera was first heard in 1883, but quickly died out before the turn of the century. This dance has been credited as the first exemplar of the Argentine Tango.

In the early 1900′s, the “compadrito” created the straightened out versions of the Argentine Tango, and established the traditional roles for the dance. He borrowed heavily from an African style dance called the Candombe, using their flexed knee stance, walking steps and turns. At this point, the Argentine Tango would not have been danced with either a flower or castanets.

Short-lived Tango singer Carlos Gardel is accredited with the origination of the modern Argentine Tango, from 1938-1940. During the 1940′s and 1950′s, major recording studios set up in Buenos Aires, and the recordings of tango orchestras and singers were prolific through those decades.

There are three major forms of modern Argentine Tango: Salón, Fantasía, and scenario (stage). Most exported shows are the scenario version, which are strict routines and not the true dance as taught in Buenos Aires.

The tango enjoys a long, but not always straightforward, history. Although its exact origins are unknown, historians figured that the tango was born in the 1880s in Buenos Aires. The city of Buenos Aires was the desire of many European immigrants, and many of them were from the lower social strata.

They arrived in Buenos Aires without their families and wives; thus, the local brothels helped them to forget their loneliness. The men passed the time with prostitutes and waitresses. They danced with them and had fun with them. The dancing was passionate and aggressive; driven desperation and desire.

Small bands began to play melodies to the dance. The tunes were influenced by African Candombe drums, Spanish and Italian songs and the milonga songs of the Pampa. Vocals were added, which were about feelings, life in the neighborhood and betrayal of women and mothers.

The high society frowned upon the tango because it was regarded as vulgar. Of course, there were a few young men from the upper class who refused to follow restrictions. They learned to dance the tango and introduced it in Paris. There, the sensual dance turned immediately into a cult.

It was played in cafes, danced in bars, and people finally found a way to express their emotions and desires. Not long afterward, the tango wave swept from Europe into the United States. 1913 was the year of the tango, and it was then when it was socially acceptable. In the same year, the tango returned to Buenos Aires, where its golden era began.
